The high school sports preseason has arrived and the Dawson Lady Eagles Volleyball team played their first preseason nonconference game of the 2017-2018 school year at home in the Dawson High School gym on Tuesday night at 6:30pm.

Screenshot 2017-08-16 15.26.17The Lady Eagles played against Katy Taylor to start off the preseason. The Lady Eagles scored 25-14 in the first set, 25-14 again in the second set, and 25-11 in their third set winning the match. Since it was the very first game, there was a lot of hype in the teams and in the crowd who came to support Dawson.

All players on both teams just had fun playing the game no matter what the score was since it was a nonconference match, it just felt good to play some volleyball. I caught an interview with the head coach for Dawson, whos last year of coaching it is, find out what he has to say in the full video!

Premium Content Pearland vs Dawson Girls Basketball

Tuesday night (Jan 10th) was a big one for both Pearland and Dawson as they played against each other, the boys played at Dawson and the girls at the Pressure pit at Pearland.

For the girls team, Pearland won 45-34 in a challenging match. The first half of the game was the Eagles lead as they made it hard for the Oilers to rack up points for the board. The lady Eagles played well the first half of the game. The second half, Pearland took it all.
The lady Oilers were consistent and kept racking up points. Dawson worked hard, but at the end Pearland lead 45-34.  Both teams left it all on the court.

Pearland 36, Spring Branch Memorial 0.

On Friday, September 2nd, the Pearland Oilers were suppose to play against the Spring Branch Memorial Mustangs at The Rig at 7pm but had to be delayed for quite some time.

This game was the first home game the Oilers have played for the season and was also senior night. After all of the seniors players, cheerleaders, and trainers were announced, a storm passed over and with Heavy rain and thunder which forced all the fans to take shelter in the Pearland High School cafeteria. The delay had end up lasting up to 2 hours, the game had resumed at 9:30 pm.
Out of the number of people who initially showed up to watch the game, about 70 percent had stayed through the storm to watch the game, these were the die hard fans that truly support the Pearland Oilers. On the other hand, the band and cheerleaders were sent home because of the storm.
As the first quarter started, Pearland was first to return. Within not even a minute the Oilers had scored a touchdown, made by number 20, during third down. With a score of 7-0 so early the fans wild up in excitement. After kicking off to the Mustangs, number 29 came in with a sack on the quarterback on 2nd down. On the next play number 21 made an interception which, after a couple plays later, led to a Pearland Oiler touchdown made by number 2. Later on in the quarter, number 2 made another TD and led the team 21-0.
In the second quarter number 2 came again with another touchdown after running 60-70 yards, the impressive run had the crowd cheering loud. Instead of going for the extra point the Oilers made a trick play for a 2 point conversion made by number 15. Later on number 2 made another TD leading the Oilers 36-0.
When half time came, the players got a 12 minute break instead of the traditional 24 minutes, since there was no band to perform their half time show.
Coming back to the game with the third quarter, the fans chanted their long “oooooooooooooohhhhhhh” like always as the punter kicked off the ball to the Mustangs. The Oiler’s defense did not allow them to go that far. In one play, the quarterback for the Mustangs dropped the ball when he was in the middle of throwing it which he had recovered, but the Oilers held them back which switched offense to the Oilers.
In the final quarter nothing major really happened at for the players on both teams were tired, I assumed, since it was around 11 because of the delay from earlier. Close to the end of the quarter the Mustangs were close to the end zone trying to make a score for themselves, but they didn’t, our defense prevented them from scoring. For the Oiler’s last drive, which was in the final 2 minutes, they could have went for the attempt to score another one, but instead kneeled the ball to end the game so everyone can go home, it was around 11:45. The final score was Pearland 36, Spring Branch Memorial 0.
Hope you were able to buy your tickets for the next game early because Friday September 9th your Pearland Oilers play against the Manvel Mavericks at The Rig, tickets had sold out fast for this is going to be an exciting game between the district rivals!

Premium Content HEADED TO STATE! Pearland vs Katy, 3-1

Pearland (31-5-1) advances to the State Tournament.

Even though their game was postponed on Friday due to the severe downpour, Pearland’s bout against Katy proved to be one worth waiting for. The game was rescheduled for Saturday in Alvin and clearly the extra day did some good for the team, as the Lady Oilers were ready to strike against Katy.  It was a one-hitter for pitcher Alyssa Denham, who helped lead Pearland to a 3-1 victory over the defending state champions.

Pearland (31-5-1) advances to the State Tournament where they will play against Weslaco on June 3rd . The Lady Oilers will attempt to win it’s third state title… but first since 2010.
“ We started on the 3rd week in January and now going into June…We grind and go hard everyday. It’s tough physically and mentally…That is why I’m so proud, these kids have grinded and risen up to the task, and I’m really proud of them”

Premium Content Dawson's Basketball Shootout

Dawson’s Basketball Shootout was one to remember this past Saturday as Pearland went head to head squaring off against Goose Creek, Willowridge, and Spring Woods, leaving it all on the court.

The Oilers, playing three competitive games, felt very confident of what they got out of the tournament, but winning isn’t everything in this tournament.

“Having fun is what it’s all about for our team to get better,” said Pearland head coach Steve Buckelew.

The purpose of the Dawson Basketball Shootout tournament is not to win, but to simply bring teams together and work on and do what they love best, “Playing basketball is what it’s all about, doing what they love.”

Dawson squared off with FB Austin, A&M, and Kingwood, playing to the wire in two out of the three of those games.

Win or lose although they still came off the court smiling.
